There is nothing more frustrating than a clogged drain. When the kitchen sink is plugged up it puts a halt to everything. Since the kitchen sink is one of the most commonly used sinks in the home, cooking and dishes can be difficult with a clogged drain. If you have a clogged shower drain, it can be frustrating. If the drain is completely clogged, you won't be able to use the shower at all. If the shower is draining slowly, your feet will be covered with water, and soap scum will build up on the floor. If you want to prevent your drains from becoming clogged, there are a few steps to take.
Pouring grease down the kitchen sink is one of the most common problems a local plumber is called out for. Grease can build up in the pipes, and when it cools, it will harden, choking off the drain opening. Pouring hot grease into a jar will seem foreign at first, but it is worth it to make that a new habit.
A drain screen is an inexpensive way to prevent the shower drain from filling up with hair. They cost next to nothing and work quite well.
Under sink garburators are a common appliance now. But when you throw the wrong stuff down there problems arise. While there are plenty of things that can go down the disposal, you should avoid the following. Eggshells, seeds, meat and similar stuff. This will prevent the garburator from shutting down.
Soft tissues and toilet paper are fine, but larger items should not get flushed. Things like paper towels, diapers, baby wipes and band-aids are examples of stuff that will back up a toilet. If it is not bio-degradable do not flush it.
You can call a plumber to fix a clogged drain. They can use an auger or even high pressure water to flush and clear everything that could potentially clog drain. They can clear any type of clog out of any household drain.
You can try clearing the drain yourself but please be aware of the dangers of chemical drain cleaners. These products do work on some clogs, but in many cases they can start corrosion and cause problems down the road.
You can try pouring some baking soda down the drain followed by the same amount of of vinegar and let it sit for ten or fifteen minutes. Then pour piping hot water down the drain to soften things up. This should clear things up if the clog was not too-too bad. If there is anything else plugging things up then chances are good you will have to call a plumber for help.
